Do You Want to Get Well?

🌊 Bid Me Come Closer: Notes From the Journey

At the end of my last blog, The Story of My Life with Heart Failure: The Beginning

I made a promise.

I said I would share the journey.

The fear.

The victories.

The setbacks.

The prayers.

The miracles.

And the practical things helping me survive this season.

This new series, Bid Me Come Closer: Notes from the Journey, is my attempt to keep that promise. These are not lessons from someone who has arrived. They are reflections from someone who is still walking, still learning, and still discovering Jesus in unexpected places. So let's begin with a question Jesus once asked a man who had been waiting a very long time:

Do you want to get well?

There was a defining moment in this journey that I will never forget.

After hearing the diagnosis, I finally asked the question that had been weighing heavily on my heart.

"What is the prognosis?"

The doctor looked at me and said:

"I don't know yet. We're just going to consider this a bump in the road. Keep doing what you're doing." Then he laid out the treatment plan.

I remember looking around the room.

I remember the fear.

I remember the tears.

I remember the look on my daughters' faces. I remember my husband researching intently—looking up the diagnosis, the medications, the treatment plan, and every possible outcome. I remember my mom, my sisters, and the rest of my family trying to process the news right alongside me. And through it all, we agreed on one thing:

God is my healer.

That day, I made a decision.

I want to get well.

I will do everything in my power to live, and I will trust God with the rest.

For me, that means:

  • Taking my medicine.
  • Avoiding sodium and making better food choices.
  • Exercising.
  • Wearing my LifeVest.
  • Following the treatment plan.

But it also means:

  • Staying close to Jesus.
  • Reading His Word.
  • Seeking His will for my life.
  • Praying and fasting so I can hear His voice clearly.
  • Following the leading of the Holy Spirit.

As I was reflecting on this journey, I thought about the man at the pool of Bethesda. For thirty-eight years, he had been unable to walk. When Jesus approached him, He asked a surprising question:

"Do you want to get well?" (John 5:6, NIV)

At first, that question seems obvious.

Of course he wanted to get well. But Jesus wasn't merely asking about healing. He was asking about willingness.

Was he willing to get up?

Was he willing to leave behind the identity he had carried for so long?

Was he willing to do what Jesus asked?

Jesus told him:

"Get up, take up your bed, and walk." (John 5:8, ESV)

The man had a decision to make.

So did I.

And so do you.

Maybe your journey isn't a health crisis.

Maybe it's depression.

Maybe it's anxiety.

Maybe it's bitterness.

Maybe it's unforgiveness.

Maybe it's an undisciplined life that's keeping you from becoming who God created you to be.

Maybe it's a habit, a fear, or a wound you've carried for years.

The question remains the same:

Do you want to get well?

Not just healed.

Not just rescued.

Not just relieved.

Well.

Whole.

Free.

Transformed.

Because wanting to get well often means partnering with God in the process.

It means taking up your mat.

It means taking the next step.

It means trusting Him enough to obey, even when you don't know where the journey will lead. For me, this season has become less about the diagnosis and more about the invitation.

An invitation to draw closer.

An invitation to trust deeper.

An invitation to keep walking toward Jesus.

So today, I leave you with the same question:

Do you want to get well?

Come walk on the water with me.

He is still sustaining us.
