50 & Jubilee: Why This Birthday Feels Different

Image
Today, I turn 50. That sentence feels bigger than I expected it to—not because of the number, but because of everything it holds: years lived, lessons learned, prayers answered, heartbreak survived, grace received, and purpose still unfolding. Many people approach 50 with mixed emotions. Some see time passing. Others measure where they are against where they thought they’d be. But I’m choosing to see 50 differently. I’m choosing to see it through the lens of Jubilee . The Meaning of 50 In Scripture, the 50th year was the Year of Jubilee —a sacred season of freedom, restoration, renewal, and release. Debts were forgiven. Land was restored. People were set free. What had been lost could be reclaimed. It was God’s invitation to begin again. What a beautiful way to view turning 50. Freedom Looks Different Now At 20, freedom meant independence. At 30, it meant building something meaningful. At 40, it meant learning resilience. But at 50? Freedom looks like knowing who I am. Freedom lo...

Drought, Fire, and the Coming Rain

Image
Here in South Georgia, we are walking through a season of drought. The ground is dry, ponds are low, and wildfires have broken out across the land. Smoke fills the air, and what once looked green now feels thirsty and fragile. As I watched the dryness and the fires, I could not help but think about how often nature mirrors the condition of the soul. There are seasons in life when we experience a spiritual drought. Prayer feels dry. Worship feels distant. Joy seems harder to find. We may still be standing on the outside, but inwardly we know something is missing. Like the earth longing for rain, our souls long for the presence of God. As David wrote: “My soul thirsts for You... in a dry and thirsty land where there is no water.” — Psalm 63:1 Sometimes drought is not punishment—it is preparation. Dry seasons reveal where our roots truly are. They show whether we have been feeding on temporary things or planted deeply in the living water of Christ. Jeremiah reminds us: “Blessed is the man...

The Immortal Jellyfish: A Spiritual Awakening

Image
There is a fascinating creature in the ocean known as Turritopsis dohrnii , (pronounced  tur-ih-TOP-sis DOR-nee-eye)  often called the immortal jellyfish . Unlike most living things that move only forward through life—from youth to age—this jellyfish can, under stress or injury, revert back to an earlier stage of life and begin again. What an incredible picture of spiritual truth. While people cannot physically reverse aging, through Jesus Christ we are offered something even greater: spiritual rebirth, renewal, and transformation. God is the only One who can take what feels old, broken, wounded, or worn out and make it new again. Born Again: Our First Spiritual Awakening The greatest renewal begins the moment we come to Christ. Jesus told Nicodemus that no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again . This new birth is not natural—it is spiritual. It is the miracle of God giving new life to the soul. When we surrender to Jesus: old guilt is washed a...

The Upwelling: Deep Calls to Deep

Image
What if the wind I thought was against me…is the very thing God is using to draw the deep out of me? Lately, the wind has felt strong. Not the kind you see coming, but the kind you feel when everything seems unsettled at once. And somewhere in the middle of it…I read about something in the ocean called upwelling. Understanding it brought an indescribable calm within me. When wind blows across the ocean’s surface, it doesn’t just create waves.  It moves water.  The surface is pushed aside,  and in its place, deeper water rises. Cold. Nutrient-rich. Life-giving. These deep waters carry what the surface has been lacking—formed over time, hidden far beneath what can be seen. What looks like disruption on the surface is actually the beginning of life beneath it. And I’m starting to see… the wind is not an interruption— it is an invitation. “Deep calls to deep…” — Psalm 42:7 There’s a spiritual upwelling that only happens when the wind b...
