A Fish Always Begins to Stink at the Head
There is an old saying: “A fish always begins to stink at the head.” In business, it is often used to mean leadership is the root of dysfunction and failure. Many times, that is true—not only in companies, but in nations, communities, churches, and homes. When the head is out of alignment, the rest of the body eventually follows.
But let us go deeper.
This truth does not only apply to organizations. It applies to each of us personally. If the head is not aligned with the Father, the whole life becomes disordered.
Have you ever heard the phrase stink’n think’n? That also begins at the head. If our thoughts are not aligned with the Lord’s thoughts, our emotions, decisions, habits, and relationships soon drift out of sync. Chaos in life often begins with disorder in the mind.
Why It Matters What We Think
King David wrote:
“O Lord, You have searched me and known me!
You know when I sit down and when I rise up;
You discern my thoughts from afar.
You search out my path and my lying down
and are acquainted with all my ways.”
Psalm 139 reveals how near God truly is. He knows every movement, every motive, and even every thought before it is fully formed. Isaiah echoes this truth by showing that God answers while we are still speaking.
That reality should awaken us.
What fills our minds each day? Are our thoughts pleasing to the Lord, or are they vain, anxious, prideful, fearful, or empty?
The battlefield of many lives is not external—it is internal. What we think eventually shapes how we live.

Benefits and Consequences
Thoughts rooted in God’s wisdom produce life, peace, and stability. Thoughts shaped by the world produce confusion, corruption, and decay.
The condition of the mind often determines the condition of the life.
Benefits of Right Thinking
1. We Are Transformed
When we reject the patterns of this world and allow our minds to be renewed in Christ, transformation takes place. We begin to think differently, live differently, and respond differently.
2. We Are Kept in Perfect Peace
When our minds remain fixed on Jesus and our trust rests in Him, He guards us with perfect peace—a peace beyond understanding.
3. We Receive Revelation
When our thoughts are set on things above, we become sensitive to the Spirit. We hear clearly, discern rightly, and receive hidden wisdom from the Lord.
“Call to me and I will answer you, and will tell you great and hidden things that you have not known.”
4. We Have What We Need
Through the knowledge of Him, God supplies everything necessary for life, godliness, and the calling He has placed on us.

Consequences of Wrong Thinking
1. We Become Unstable
When we alternate between trusting God and trusting self, we become double-minded. One moment full of faith, the next full of fear. This produces inconsistency and disorder.
2. We Become Defiled
Scripture teaches that when the heart is corrupt, the mind and conscience also become polluted. When the inside is unclean, nothing outside appears pure.
3. We Become Depraved
Romans 1 shows that when people reject God’s wisdom and exalt their own understanding, they are handed over to the fruit of their own rebellion.
4. Death Begins to Work
Sin often begins as a thought. If entertained long enough, it becomes action. If repeated long enough, it becomes bondage. Sin gives birth to death.
This may show up as death to joy, death to peace, death to purpose, death to faith, or death to intimacy with Christ.

How to Stop the Rot
Now that we understand the source, how do we return to alignment with the Father?
1. Renew Your Mind
Lay aside the old man and put on the new. Transformation begins here.
2. Take Every Thought Captive
Do not let every thought stay. Test it. Confront it. Bring it into obedience to Christ.
3. Walk in Wisdom
Wisdom protects, guides, and delivers.
4. Grow in Maturity
Be innocent concerning evil, but mature in understanding.
5. Reject Self-Reliance
Lean not on your own understanding. Trust the Lord, and He will make your path straight.
6. Set Your Mind Above
You have died with Christ and now live hidden in Him. Share His perspective.
7. Stay Sober-Minded
Prepare your mind for action. Live alert, watchful, and anchored in hope.

Conclusion
David beautifully summarizes this posture of alignment.
First, he describes a heart at rest—one no longer striving over matters beyond its reach, but quietly trusting in God:
“O Lord, my heart is not lifted up; my eyes are not raised too high...
But I have calmed and quieted my soul.”
Then he offers a second prayer of surrender:
“Search me, O God, and know my heart!
Try me and know my thoughts!
And see if there be any grievous way in me,
and lead me in the way everlasting!”
This is the path of Kingdom order.
When the head is surrendered, the life becomes aligned.
When the mind is renewed, the heart finds peace.
When our thoughts belong to Him, the whole person begins to flourish.
